Working with Pfizer, the delivery system with 40 owned and affiliated hospitals and more than 100 health centers and urgent care facilities, as well as its innovationOchsner lab, will look for ways to enhance the clinical trial experience and ease participation in trials for patients and their physicians with the goal of improved outcomes.

Patients will be able to use new, unspecified tools to make the clinical trial process more inclusive and enjoyable. Clinicians will see reduced manual data entry as a result of improved data system integration and they also will have access to automated study tools that will free up time to permit them to offer clinical trial research as an option to a broader range of patients. Further, research groups will see efficiencies from interoperability that may lower costs while increasing capacity, according Ochsner.

In a \u201cproof of value\u201d test, researchers were able to transfer mock data from Ochsner\u2019s electronic health record to Pfizer\u2019s electronic data capture system used in Pfizer clinical trials.

\u201cPartnering with Pfizer allows us to transform medicine by creating a clinical trial experience that improved patient participation, integration, communication and accessibility,\u201d said Richard Milani, chief clinical transformation officer and medical director of innovation at Ochsner.

In the next phase, the organizations will create new ways to digitize patient and clinician experiences in clinical trials with particular attention to patient preferences on access to and use of their health data to enhance the quality and value of clinical research interactions for all participants.

* WellSpan Health has worked with Citrix Systems to create a digital workspace so more than 1,500 physicians and advanced clinicians can securely access the applications and information they need anywhere and anytime. \u201cWe realize that time is precious and every second counts,\u201d says Mick Murphy, vice president and chief technology officer at WellSpan. That\u2019s why we are committed to providing our doctors and other clinicians with solutions that enable them to make intelligent decisions in real-time and delivery optimal outcomes.\u201d The digital workspaces came about when WellSpan realized that the every employee spends 20 percent of their time searching for information and 25 percent more time completing administrative tasks. Now, log-in times that took as long as 30 seconds are down to four seconds.

* Cooper University Health Care in New Jersey and south Delaware, anchored by a 635-bed hospital, will renew its care management agreement with CarePort Health, a vendor of care coordination software. Cooper University has a strong need for better coordination as it operates an accountable care organization and participates in several bundled payment programs. \u201cWe needed technology that would allow us to follow our patients after they are discharged from the hospital,\u201d said Elizabeth Nice, executive director of the ACO. \u201cGetting timely, actionable data on patients in post-acute facilities is key to improving patient outcomes. Cooper also will use the vendor\u2019s software to manage its post-acute network and deepen relationships with those providers. The Cooper enterprise includes a children\u2019s hospital, four urgent care centers and more than 100 outpatient sites with 630 doctors across 70 specialties.

* Henry Ford Health System in Dearborn, Mich., will implement the financial platform of software vendor VisitPay to aid patients in meeting their financial obligations and improve patient satisfaction. Proprietary scoring, segmentation and advanced analytics will help Henry Ford understand patient preferences and expectations in the billing process. \u201cAs we move to enhance our transparency and patient experience, this platform will allow us to offer patients the convenience and flexibility to manage their out-of-pocket costs,\u201d according to Kevin O\u2019Neill, vice president of revenue cycle at Henry Ford.

* Brown & Toland Physicians in Oakland, Calif., recently selected the Epic electronic health record system to integrate physicians and staff into one interoperable clinical and revenue cycle platform. Nearly 60 percent of California residents have a health record in an organization that uses or currently is installing Epic. \u201cEpic\u2019s robust interoperable data exchange will allow us to share data securely between Epic and non-Epic systems to improve patient care quality and workflow efficiencies,\u201d said Soma Bulusu, CIO.
