The provider organization is making the move to update its picture archiving and communication system (PACS) infrastructure with plans to utilize artificial intelligence and other applications for medical imaging.

TriHealth\u2019s enterprise imaging strategy will augment radiologists\u2019 image reading workflow by creating an architecture for the storage and management of image data that can easily scale and connect with the health system\u2019s electronic health record.

Executives from TriHealth say they anticipate that the Watson Health architecture will enable its clinicians to have timely access to medical images that are critical to treatment decisions.

TriHealth also will adopt IBM Watson Imaging Clinical Review, a retrospective cognitive data review tool that analyzes EHR data to help support a reliable patient record. The intent is to support accurate, timely and coordinated care decisions. Watson Imaging Clinical Review is targeted to go live throughout the entire TriHealth system early next year.

\u201cAdvanced imaging technology will significantly improve the workflow of radiology and other image-intensive specialties, enhancing our physicians\u2019 ability to diagnose and treat patients,\u201d predicts Frank Schlueter, MD, system chief of radiology for TriHealth.

With the new system in place, TriHealth clinicians and physicians are expected to have easier and more efficient access for image retrieval. Radiologists will have improved tools to allow for efficiencies with reads. \u201cOur goal is to provide our physicians with a tool that delivers data and insight that helps optimize efficiency and quality in the care they deliver to patients,\u201d says John Ward, TriHealth\u2019s senior vice president and chief information officer.
